Appraiser Continuing Education Requirements
If you hold a South Dakota appraiser credential, South Dakota requires annual renewal. All appraiser credentials, including inactive credentials, expire on September 30 each year. However, continuing education is generally reported in odd-numbered renewal years. The South Dakota Appraiser Certification Program states that appraisers must complete and submit documentation of 28 hours of approved continuing education in each odd-numbered year.

What South Dakota appraisers need
South Dakota’s current guidance states that state-certified, state-licensed, and state-registered appraisers must complete 28 hours of continuing education in each odd-numbered renewal year. The requirement is explained on the South Dakota Appraiser Certification Program’s Continuing Education Requirements page.

South Dakota also states that approved continuing education courses must be at least two class hours in length. Continuing education may be completed through approved courses or seminars, including approved distance education.

USPAP requirement
South Dakota requires the 7-Hour National USPAP Continuing Education Course as part of the 28-hour continuing education requirement. The required USPAP course must be completed before July 1 of the preceding even-numbered year.

For the next cycle, South Dakota appraisers should plan to complete the 2026–2027 7-Hour National USPAP Continuing Education Course by June 30, 2026. South Dakota’s Continuing Education Requirements page states that a $100 penalty fee applies when the 7-Hour USPAP course is completed after the June 30 deadline.

Valuation Bias and Fair Housing requirement
South Dakota’s appraiser continuing education page does not currently identify a separate state-specific Valuation Bias and Fair Housing continuing education requirement for renewal. Appraisers should continue to monitor the South Dakota Appraiser Certification Program, the Continuing Education Requirements page, and applicable AQB Criteria changes for future updates.

Important South Dakota deadlines
South Dakota appraiser credentials expire on September 30 each year. Renewal is annual, even though continuing education is generally submitted in odd-numbered years.

The Board’s Renewal Process and Forms page recommends submitting the renewal application by August 16. The Board’s Certification Renewal page also states that late renewals after October 1 are subject to monthly late penalty fees.

For USPAP, South Dakota appraisers should remember the separate deadline: the required 7-Hour USPAP course must be completed by June 30 of the preceding even-numbered year.

Approved courses
South Dakota requires continuing education to be completed through approved courses or seminars. The Board provides CE guidance on its Continuing Education Requirements page and maintains additional education-related materials through its Forms page.

Approved continuing education courses must be at least two class hours in length. Education providers are responsible for obtaining approval, issuing certificates of completion, and maintaining participant lists.

Legal Authority / Compliance References
South Dakota’s appraiser licensing and continuing education requirements are governed by South Dakota Codified Law Chapter 36-21B and Administrative Rules of South Dakota Article 20:14. The South Dakota Appraiser Certification Program links to applicable laws, rules, and standards through its Appraiser Certification and Certification Renewal pages.

Important CE-related provisions include S.D. Admin. R. 20:14:13:01 – Continuing education requirements, which establishes the 28-hour CE requirement in odd-numbered renewal years and the 7-Hour USPAP requirement, and S.D. Admin. R. 20:14:13:01.01 – Continuing education not required, which addresses exceptions for certain first-time applicants, inactive appraisers, and qualifying reciprocal appraisers.

How to Renew
South Dakota appraisers renew through the state’s online renewal process. The Board’s Renewal Process and Forms page states that the renewal application and payment must be completed online and that the system will not allow submission until the application is complete.
In odd-numbered renewal years, appraisers must submit the renewal application, applicable fee, and required CE documentation. In even-numbered years, appraisers generally renew by submitting the renewal application and fee, unless another requirement applies to the individual credential holder.

Pro-Tips for 2026
-
Do not wait until the 2027 renewal period to complete USPAP. South Dakota requires the 7-Hour USPAP course to be completed by June 30, 2026 for the next CE cycle.
-
Even though South Dakota credentials expire September 30, the Board recommends submitting renewal applications by August 16. Submitting early helps avoid processing issues, missing CE documentation, or late renewal penalties.
