Appraiser Continuing Education Requirements
If you hold a Montana appraiser credential, Montana currently uses an annual renewal cycle. The Montana Board of Real Estate Appraisers states that the renewal period runs from February 1 through March 31 each year, and the Board’s forms page says the deadline date for all licensees is March 31.

What Montana appraisers need
Montana’s current Board guidance states that, at every other renewal, licensees must provide evidence of having completed at least 28 hours of instruction in courses or seminars approved by the Board, including the required 7-hour National USPAP update course. The Board’s current licensed-appraiser page states this directly, and the Board’s current approved-course list shows the Montana Board of Real Estate Appraisers’ approved continuing education offerings updated March 5, 2026.

Montana’s official administrative rule materials also state that licensees must retain completion certificates for five years, and that failure to respond to an audit or to comply with continuing education requirements may result in administrative suspension and reporting to the national registry until the deficiency is cured.

USPAP requirement
Montana requires the 7-hour National USPAP Update course as part of the 28-hour CE package due at every other renewal. The Board’s current licensed-appraiser page states that the 28 hours must include the 7 hours National USPAP update course, and the approved-course list includes the 2026-2027 7-Hour National USPAP Continuing Education Course among Montana-approved offerings.

Valuation Bias and Fair Housing requirement
Montana now expressly states that, effective January 1, 2026, all apprentice, licensed, and certified appraisers must complete a course meeting the Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations outline every two calendar years. The Board’s current certified-general page states that the first time an appraiser completes the requirement, the course must be 7 hours, and that every two calendar years thereafter the appraiser must complete a 4-hour course. Montana’s current approved-course list also includes approved 4-hour and 7-hour National Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations courses.

Important Montana deadlines
Montana’s Board states that renewal opens on February 1 and expires on March 31 each year. The Board’s forms page also states that late renewal fees will apply after March 31. For the 2026 renewal cycle, however, the Board specifically says that renewal fees are abated.

Current Montana renewal fees
The Montana Board’s current forms page states that renewal fees are abated for the 2026 renewal cycle. Because the Board’s current public page gives that direct operational instruction for 2026, that is the most practical fee guidance for this cycle.

Approved courses
Montana maintains an official Approved Qualifying and Continuing Education Courses list through the Board’s education page. The current approved-course PDF is marked Updated 3/5/26 and includes Montana-approved continuing-education offerings, including the 2026-2027 7-Hour National USPAP Continuing Education Course and approved 4-hour and 7-hour VBFH courses.

How to Renew
Montana appraisers renew online through the Board’s Renew License link in the Montana eBiz portal. The Board’s forms page states that the renewal period begins on February 1, expires on March 31, and specifically instructs licensees to renew by clicking on the Renew License button and logging in to their eBiz account. Because Montana requires CE evidence at every other renewal, appraisers should confirm before renewal whether their current cycle is the CE-reporting year and ensure the required USPAP and, beginning in 2026, the required VBFH course have been completed if due.

Pro-Tips for 2026
-
Do not wait until the end of March. Montana’s Board opens renewal on February 1 and late renewal fees apply after March 31, even though renewal fees themselves are abated for the 2026 cycle.
-
Check whether yours is the CE-reporting renewal before you assume you only need to pay and click submit. Montana’s Board says the 28 hours are due at every other renewal, not every annual renewal.
-
Make sure your 2026 planning includes the new Valuation Bias and Fair Housing course. Montana’s Board now states that the first course must be 7 hours, followed by a 4-hour course every two calendar years thereafter.
-
Before registering, verify the course on Montana’s official approved-course list rather than relying only on a provider’s advertising. Montana’s current approved-course PDF is marked Updated 3/5/26.
