Alabama
Appraiser Continuing Education Requirements

If you hold an Alabama appraiser credential, Alabama uses an annual renewal system, but its continuing-education structure is built around a 28-hour, two-year CE cycle. Alabama law requires renewal applications and fees to be submitted between September 1 and September 30, and the Board’s current CE rule requires 28 hours of continuing education every two years.

What Alabama appraisers need

The current Alabama CE rule is Rule 780-X-12-.02. That rule requires appraisers seeking renewal to present evidence of having completed the equivalent of 28 hours of continuing education every two years. The rule also states that a classroom hour is 50 minutes out of each 60-minute segment and that CE credit is granted only where the educational offering is at least 2 hours long. Alabama’s official Education Approval Process page is consistent with that minimum course-length requirement.

USPAP requirement

Under Rule 780-X-12-.02, at least 7 hours of the two-year CE total must be the National USPAP Continuing Education course, or its AQB equivalent, taught by an AQB-certified instructor. The Board’s official Education Approval Process page also states that 7 hours of the required 28 hours each two-year period must be USPAP update.

Valuation Bias and Fair Housing requirement

Alabama amended Rule 780-X-12-.02 so that, for any license renewal occurring after January 1, 2026, appraisers must also successfully complete a course meeting the Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations Outline every two calendar years. The first time an appraiser completes this CE requirement, the course must be 7 hours, unless the appraiser already completed the 7-hour plus 1-hour exam version in qualifying education. Every two calendar years thereafter, the course must be at least 4 hours. Alabama’s official approved-course report currently lists both 4-hour and 7-hour National Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations CE courses.

Important Alabama deadlines

Alabama law provides that a renewal application and fee must be submitted between September 1 and September 30, and that the licensee is delinquent after September 30. The Board’s fee rule, Rule 780-X-4-.02, states that annual license fees are payable during September each year and imposes a $250 delinquent charge if the annual license fee is not paid by October 31.

The Board’s current Appraiser License Renewal page states that, for the 2025–2026 renewal cycle, online renewal was not available until August 1 and that no renewals would be accepted before that date. The Board’s broader Renewal Information page also states that Alabama appraisers renew annually, that the Board sends updated appraiser reports to the Appraisal Subcommittee daily during renewals, and that renewal certificates are now issued by email rather than mailed in hard copy.

Approved courses

Alabama’s official Education Approval Process page explains that, for courses taught in Alabama, the Board approves courses and instructors for a 24-month period that expires on September 30 of every even-numbered year. That page also states that, for an appraiser to receive credit for a course taken outside Alabama, the course must be appraisal-related and the course and instructor must be approved by the appraiser regulatory board in that state. Alabama’s official Approved Appraisal Courses report is the best current source for confirming whether a course is presently approved.

Legal Authority / Compliance References

Alabama’s renewal and CE framework is grounded in Code of Alabama § 34-27A-15 and Code of Alabama § 34-27A-19. Section 34-27A-15 governs the annual renewal window and requires CE evidence with renewal, while Section 34-27A-19 authorizes the Board to set continuing-education requirements by administrative rule. The current operative CE rule is Rule 780-X-12-.02, and the current fee rule is Rule 780-X-4-.02. Alabama’s official Board guidance appears on the Renewal Information, Appraiser License Renewal, Education Approval Process, and Approved Appraisal Courses pages.

How to Renew

In Alabama, appraisers renew annually. Complete your CE first, then file your renewal during the Board’s renewal window. Alabama law requires renewal applications and fees to be submitted between September 1 and September 30, and the Board’s current renewal page shows that the online renewal portal for the 2025–2026 cycle did not open until August 1. The Board now issues renewal certificates by email, not by hard copy mail. If you miss the September window, the Board’s fee rule imposes a $250 delinquent charge if the annual license fee is not paid by October 31. Renewal-specific questions are directed by the Board to its contact form.

Pro-Tips for 2026

Do not assume Alabama appraiser renewal opens in July. For the currently posted 2025–2026 cycle, the Board’s official renewal page says online renewal was not available until August 1. That makes August, not late September, the safer target for beginning your renewal process.

Avoid the September rush by finishing your CE before the September renewal window opens. Alabama’s rule structure combines an annual renewal deadline with a two-year CE cycle, so waiting until September can create unnecessary pressure if you still need USPAP or the required Valuation Bias and Fair Housing course.

Before registering, check Alabama’s official Approved Appraisal Courses report rather than relying only on a provider’s advertising. Alabama’s approved-course report is current as of April 14, 2026 and already shows both 4-hour and 7-hour Valuation Bias and Fair Housing CE offerings.

If you take a course outside Alabama, make sure it is both appraisal-related and approved by the appraiser regulatory board in the state where it is taught. Alabama’s official education-approval guidance makes that point expressly.
