Appraiser Continuing Education Requirements
If you hold a North Carolina appraiser credential, North Carolina currently uses an annual renewal system. The North Carolina Appraisal Board states that renewals begin each year on May 1 and are due by June 30, and G.S. 93E-1-7 provides that trainee registrations, licenses, and certificates expire on June 30 unless renewed before that date.

What North Carolina appraisers need
The Board’s current renewal guidance says that all registered trainees and licensed and certified appraisers must complete 28 hours of continuing education. North Carolina’s practical CE cycle is currently split into a required 7-hour National USPAP Continuing Education course in the even-numbered year and the remaining 21 hours by May 31 of the odd-numbered year. The Board also states that there is no carryover of CE hours from one cycle to the next.

North Carolina’s Board rules also provide that each appraisal continuing-education course must include a minimum of two classroom hours of instruction on real estate appraisal or related topics. See 21 NCAC 57A .0204.

USPAP requirement
North Carolina requires the current 7-hour National USPAP Continuing Education course as part of renewal. The Board’s renewal page states that seven of the required 28 hours must be the 7-Hour National USPAP Continuing Education course, and the Board’s current rule text provides that the USPAP course must be completed between October 1 of an odd-numbered year and June 1 of an even-numbered year. The Board’s current home page specifically states that all current trainees, licensees, and certificate holders must complete the 2026–2027 7-Hour National USPAP Continuing Education course by May 31, 2026.

Valuation Bias and Fair Housing requirement
North Carolina now expressly requires the Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course for current trainees, licensees, and certificate holders. The Board’s current Valuation Bias & Fair Housing Update page states that, effective June 1, 2025, every current trainee, licensee, and certificate holder must complete a course meeting the VBFH content requirements, that the course must be at least 7 hours the first time, and that it must be completed by May 31, 2027. The Board’s rule text also states that, after the first cycle, the course length must be at least 4 hours in each continuing-education cycle thereafter.

North Carolina also states that any VBFH course taken before June 1, 2025 does not meet this requirement. For appraisers planning to upgrade on or after January 1, 2026, the Board states that the qualifying-education version of the course, which is 7 hours plus a 1-hour exam, must be completed in addition to the applicable qualifying education for the upgrade.

Important North Carolina deadlines
North Carolina’s current renewal guidance states that all required CE must be completed before a licensee can renew. If the required CE is not completed by May 31, the licensee will not be able to renew until after July 1 or later and will owe the $10 per month late fee. The Board’s statute, G.S. 93E-1-7, also establishes the $200 renewal fee, the $10 per month late fee, and the rule that a credential expired for more than 12 months may be treated as no longer previously licensed or certified for reinstatement purposes.

The Board’s renewal page further states that, for up to 12 months after lapse, a licensee may late renew by paying the renewal fee, the optional National Registry fee if desired, the accumulated late fee, and completing all required CE. From 12 months to 5 years after expiration, the Board states that reinstatement requires an application for reinstatement, a new criminal background check, the application fee, and completion of all required CE. Reinstatement is not retroactive.

Online and distance education
North Carolina allows appraisers to complete all CE online or in the classroom. The Board’s renewal page specifically states that all CE may be taken online, but it also cautions that, if the course is asynchronous, the delivery mechanism must have current approval by an organization approved by the AQB, such as IDECC, in order to receive equivalent approval. The Board’s approved-course pages also distinguish among classroom, synchronous, and asynchronous offerings.

Approved courses
North Carolina maintains official lists of Approved Continuing Education, USPAP Continuing Education, and Valuation Bias & Fair Housing Update courses. The current approved continuing-education list is dated April 6, 2026, and the current approved USPAP provider list is dated March 16, 2026. The Board also notes that courses marked O/L are online/asynchronous offerings.

North Carolina’s rules also allow a current or former trainee, licensee, or certificate holder to request CE credit for a course that is not already Board-approved by submitting a request and the $50 nonrefundable evaluation fee before June 15 of an odd-numbered year. That process appears in 21 NCAC 57A .0204.

Legal Authority / Compliance References
North Carolina’s renewal statute is G.S. 93E-1-7, which establishes June 30 expiration, the $200 renewal fee, the Board’s authority to require continuing education, and the $10 per month late fee. How to Renew
North Carolina appraisers renew through the Board’s online NCAB Online Licensee Login. The Board states that renewals begin on May 1 and are due by June 30, and that all required CE must already be completed before renewal. The current renewal fee is $200, and appraisers who want to remain on the National Registry must add the Board’s stated $60 National Registry fee. The login page also states that, if a licensee has never set a password, the default password is the last four digits of the SSN, and that login issues should be directed to ncab@ncab.org.

Pro-Tips for 2026
Do not wait until June to handle renewal. In North Carolina, the renewal window opens May 1, but the Board says all required CE must be completed before renewal and that a licensee without required CE by May 31 will not be able to renew until after July 1 and will owe late fees.
Treat May 31, 2026 as the critical 2026 deadline for the 2026–2027 7-Hour USPAP course. The Board’s current home page states this deadline expressly.

Do not postpone the first VBFH course until the last minute. North Carolina requires current trainees, licensees, and certificate holders to complete the first qualifying VBFH course by May 31, 2027, and the Board says courses taken before June 1, 2025 do not count.
Before registering for an asynchronous course, confirm that the course delivery mechanism has current approval through an AQB-approved organization such as IDECC. The Board’s renewal guidance specifically flags this point.
