Indiana
Appraiser Continuing Education Requirements

If you hold an Indiana appraiser credential, Indiana currently uses a two-year continuing education cycle. The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency states that, to renew in active status, an individual appraiser licensee or certificate holder must complete 28 classroom hours of continuing education within the two-year reporting period, and at least 7 of those hours must be completed in current USPAP. The PLA also notes that renewal notices are sent approximately 90 days before expiration.

What Indiana appraisers need

Indiana’s current continuing-education rule is 876 IAC 3-5-1. That rule states that, as a prerequisite to renewal, a licensee or certificate holder must satisfy the continuing-education criteria established by the Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria. Indiana’s current PLA licensing page summarizes that requirement as 28 classroom hours within the two-year reporting period, including at least 7 hours in current USPAP.

USPAP requirement

Indiana’s current mandatory USPAP rule is 876 IAC 3-5-1.5. That rule provides that the required USPAP continuing education must be obtained not later than six months after the effective date of a new USPAP edition and must be an updated course covering that new edition. The PLA’s current licensing page also states that at least 7 hours of the renewal-period total must be completed in current 2024/2026 USPAP.

Valuation Bias and Fair Housing requirement

Indiana appraisers should now plan on the Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course as part of current CE compliance. The AQB’s 2026 Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria guidance states that appraisers must successfully complete a VB-FH course every two calendar years beginning January 1, 2026, with a 7-hour initial CE course and a minimum 4-hour course every two calendar years thereafter. Indiana’s Real Estate Commission minutes from August 13, 2025 state that the AQB revised its mandatory CE requirements to include valuation bias and fair housing education and that the Commission approved amendments to 876 IAC 3-5-1 to replace “2022” with “2026.” Indiana’s current approved CE course list also includes a 7-hour “Valuation Bias & Fair Housing Law & Regulations” course.

Important Indiana deadlines

Indiana’s public licensing materials and rule structure reflect a two-year renewal period that ends on June 30 of even-numbered years. The PLA’s current reinstatement examples use renewal cycles ending June 30, 2022, June 30, 2024, and June 30, 2026, and the Indiana Register’s economic-impact materials state that appraiser licenses continue to expire on June 30 of every even-numbered year. The governing renewal rule, 876 IAC 3-2-4, provides that licenses expire on the date established by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency and that renewal requires payment of the fee, filing the renewal application, and satisfying the CE requirements in 876 IAC 3-5.

Initial-licensee exemption

Indiana’s PLA states that a licensee or certificate holder initially licensed within the last 185 days of a two-year renewal period is not required to obtain any hours of continuing education for that period. That same point is reflected in Indiana’s rulemaking materials.

Approved courses

Indiana recognizes both Board-approved and AQB-approved continuing education. The Indiana PLA states that all AQB-approved courses are approved by Indiana. Indiana also maintains a current approved course listing, and that list includes courses such as the 7-hour National USPAP Update Course, Indiana law courses, and the 7-hour Valuation Bias & Fair Housing Law & Regulations course. You can reference the current Indiana approved course list and the PLA’s Real Estate Appraiser Licensing Information page.

Legal Authority / Compliance References

Indiana’s current continuing-education rule is 876 IAC 3-5-1, which states that, as a prerequisite to renewal, a real estate appraiser licensee or certificate holder must satisfy the continuing-education criteria established by the applicable Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria. Indiana’s current mandatory USPAP rule is 876 IAC 3-5-1.5, which requires completion of the updated USPAP course not later than six months after the effective date of a new USPAP edition. Indiana’s renewal rule is 876 IAC 3-2-4, which governs expiration, renewal, inactive status, and reactivation.

Indiana’s public Real Estate Appraiser Licensing Information page states that active renewal requires 28 classroom hours within the two-year reporting period, including at least 7 hours in current USPAP, and it also states that licensees initially licensed within the last 185 days of the cycle are exempt from CE for that period. That same page further states that all AQB-approved courses are approved by Indiana.

The basis for treating Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations as part of Indiana’s current CE framework is the AQB’s 2026 Criteria guidance, together with Indiana’s own rulemaking record and course approvals. The Indiana Real Estate Commission’s August 13, 2025 meeting minutes state that the AQB revised its mandatory CE requirements to include valuation bias and fair housing education and that the Commission approved amendments updating 876 IAC 3-5-1 from the 2022 criteria to the 2026 criteria. Indiana’s current approved CE course list includes a 7-hour Valuation Bias & Fair Housing Law & Regulations course.
