Louisiana
Appraiser Continuing Education Requirements

If you hold a Louisiana appraiser credential, Louisiana uses a two-year renewal cycle. The Louisiana Real Estate Appraisers Board states that, during each two-year certification period and as a prerequisite to renewal, state licensed appraisers must complete 28 hours of continuing education in Board-approved courses. The Board also states that the biennial renewal period opens October 1.

What Louisiana appraisers need

Louisiana’s current Board guidance states that the required 28 hours consist of the mandatory 7-hour National USPAP Update Course plus 21 hours in Board-approved appraisal electives. The Board also states that continuing-education credit is not granted for courses that are less than two instructional hours.

USPAP requirement

Louisiana requires the 7-hour USPAP Update Course during each two-year certification period. The Board’s official continuing-education page identifies USPAP as a mandatory component of the renewal requirement, and the Board’s USPAP page confirms its current USPAP course administration.

Valuation Bias and Fair Housing requirement

Beginning January 1, 2026, Louisiana requires appraisers to complete a course meeting the Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations outline every two years. The Board expressly states that this new mandatory course is part of the required 28 hours, not in addition to them. The Board also states that the first-time course must be 7 hours, and future cycles require at least 4 hours every two years. Appraisers whose renewal period ended on December 31, 2025 did not need to complete the course before that renewal; instead, the course must be completed during the 2026–27 license period for the next renewal cycle.

Important Louisiana deadlines

Louisiana’s official renewal page states that the biennial renewal period opens October 1. For the current posted cycle, renewals were timely if received or postmarked on or before December 31, 2025. The Board’s current page lists a $25 delinquent fee for renewals completed January 1, 2026 through February 15, 2026, and a $100 delinquent fee for renewals completed February 16, 2026 through June 30, 2026. The Board also requires all appraisers to upload all education certificates in one PDF for online renewals or submit copies with mailed renewals.

Approved courses

Louisiana’s official continuing-education page states that courses completed through institutions or providers not already included on the Board’s approved list may be considered on an individual basis, but they must be submitted to the Board for a determination before the renewal application is submitted. The Board’s website also maintains current-licensee pages for continuing education and USPAP administration.

Legal Authority / Compliance References

Louisiana’s current practical CE and renewal guidance appears on the Louisiana Real Estate Appraisers Board’s official Continuing Education, Biennial Renewal Period, USPAP Courses, Office Information, and Real Estate Appraisers Law pages. The Board’s continuing-education page is the clearest current source for the 28-hour requirement, the 7-hour USPAP requirement, and the January 1, 2026 implementation of the VBFH course within the 28-hour total.

How to Renew

Louisiana allows renewal either online or by paper submission. The Board recommends using the online process through the MyLREAB Portal because it speeds processing and allows payment by credit card or ACH. The Board also states that all appraisers must upload all education certificates in one PDF for online renewals or submit copies with mailed renewals, regardless of whether the certificates were previously submitted or already appear in the portal.

Pro-Tips for 2026

  • Do not assume the new VBFH course had to be completed before the December 31, 2025 renewal. Louisiana’s Board expressly says appraisers renewing at the end of 2025 did not need the course before that renewal and instead must complete it during the 2026–27 license period.

  • Before renewing, combine your CE certificates into one PDF if you are renewing online. Louisiana’s renewal page says that certificate upload step is required for timely processing and ASC audit compliance.
