Appraiser Continuing Education Requirements

If you hold a Kentucky appraiser credential, staying current on your continuing education requirements is essential to renewing on time and keeping your license or certification in good standing.

Kentucky law changed significantly effective July 15, 2026. House Bill 355 (2026 Regular Session) amended KRS Chapter 324A and moved Kentucky from an annual renewal/CE cycle to a biennial cycle. The Real Estate Appraisers Board was also reconstituted as the Real Property Appraisers Board.

What Kentucky appraisers need under the new law

Effective July 15, 2026, KRS 324A.045 requires:

• 28 hours of Board-approved continuing education per biennial license period (up from 14 hours annually).

• The most recent 7-hour National USPAP Update Course, or its equivalent, completed within the first six months of the biennial license period — or immediately upon availability if the course isn't offered within that window.

• Renewal on a biennial basis, on the date(s) the Board establishes by administrative regulation.

Transition period — confirm current-cycle details with the Board

Because this statutory change took effect so recently, the administrative regulations that operationalize it (governing exact biennial cycle start/end dates, transition-year proration for licensees mid-cycle, and current late-fee amounts) were still being finalized as of this writing. The Board's continuing education and renewal rules are moving from 201 KAR Chapter 30 to a new Title 831, Chapter 3. Until that recodification is complete and confirmed, appraisers should verify their specific renewal date and current-cycle CE requirement directly with the Kentucky Real Property Appraisers Board (KRPAB).

Late renewal

KRS 324A.045(3) no longer sets a statutory cap on the late fee; the amount is now set by the Board through administrative regulation. Appraisers who miss their renewal date should confirm the current fee with the Board.

Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations Course

The Appraiser Qualification Board's (AQB) Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria requires all aspiring appraisers seeking to obtain or upgrade a credential to complete an 8-hour VBFHLR course, and requires all other credentialed appraisers to complete a 7-hour VBFHLR course by December 31, 2027.

Special note for supervisors and associates

Kentucky has required supervisors and associates to complete the 7-hour Kentucky Mandatory Supervisor/Associate course every three years. Confirm this requirement is unaffected by the 2026 statutory changes before relying on it for a renewal that falls after your cycle converts to biennial.

The current Kentucky continuing education and renewal requirements for licensed and certified real property appraisers are set out in KRS 324A.045 (effective July 15, 2026), as amended by 2026 Ky. Acts, House Bill 355. That amendment increased the CE requirement to 28 hours per biennial license period, tied the USPAP Update Course requirement to the first six months of the biennial period, converted renewal from annual to biennial, and removed the statutory $200 cap on the late renewal fee in favor of a fee set by Board regulation.

 

House Bill 355 also renamed the regulating body the Real Property Appraisers Board and reconstituted it as an independent agency of seven members attached to the Department of Professional Licensing (KRS 324A.015, effective July 15, 2026).

 

Implementing administrative regulations are in transition from 201 KAR Chapter 30 to a new Title 831, Chapter 3. Appraisers should confirm current regulation text and effective dates directly with the Board.
