Kentucky
Appraiser Continuing Education Requirements

If you hold a Kentucky appraiser credential, staying current on your continuing education requirements is essential to renewing on time and keeping your license or certification in good standing.

Kentucky licensed and certified real property appraisers must complete 14 hours of Board-approved continuing education each year and submit proof of completion by May 31. Kentucky’s annual CE period runs from June 1 of the previous year through May 31 of the current year.

What Kentucky appraisers need each year

Kentucky requires 14 hours of approved continuing education every license year. In even-numbered years, that requirement must include the 7-hour National USPAP Update Course, or its equivalent, completed between January 1 and May 31. Those 7 hours apply toward the 14-hour annual total.

Important Kentucky deadlines

To renew on time, Kentucky appraisers should keep two dates in mind:

  • May 31 — CE must be completed, and proof must be submitted to the Board.

  • July 1 — annual renewal deadline.

Failure to complete and submit CE by May 31 prevents renewal until the deficiency is cured and the required late fee is paid. Failure to renew by July 1 results in a $200 late renewal fee.

Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations Course

While Kentucky law does not yet specifically mention the Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations (VBFHLR) Course in regulations, the Appraiser Qualification Board's (AQB) Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria requires all aspiring appraisers seeking to obtain or upgrade their existing credential to successfully complete an 8-hour VBFHLR course.  All other credentialed appraisers must complete a 7-hour VBFHLR course by December 31, 2027.

Repeat-course limitation

Kentucky does not grant continuing education credit for repeating the same course title and content within a 24-month period.

Special note for supervisors and associates

The Kentucky Real Estate Appraisers Board also states that supervisors and associates must complete the 7-hour Kentucky Mandatory Supervisor/Associate course every three years.

Pending change to watch

Kentucky has a newer continuing education regulation, 831 KAR 3:100, on file. However, the official Kentucky regulations site currently labels it “PROPOSED” and “not yet current.” That proposed regulation would continue the 14-hour annual CE structure and the periodic USPAP course requirement, and it also includes a Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course requirement. Until that regulation becomes effective, it should be treated as a pending change, not as the current rule.

Legal Authority / Compliance References

The current Kentucky continuing education requirement for licensed and certified real property appraisers is 14 hours of Board-approved CE each license year prior to May 31, with proof of completion submitted by the same date. That requirement appears in 201 KAR 30:190, Section 18(1).

The current Kentucky regulation also requires completion of the 7-hour National USPAP Update Course, or its equivalent, between January 1 and May 31 of each even-numbered year. That requirement appears in 201 KAR 30:190, Section 18(2)(a).

The Kentucky regulation provides that the renewal date is July 1 of each calendar year and that failure to renew by July 1 results in a $200 late renewal fee. Those provisions appear in 201 KAR 30:190, Section 17. KRS 324A.045 also addresses renewal timing and authorizes a late fee not to exceed $200.

Kentucky also provides that credit for repeating the same course title and content within a 24-month period shall not be granted. That appears in 201 KAR 30:190, Section 18(8).

The proposed recodification at 831 KAR 3:100 is not yet in effect. The Kentucky Legislative Research Commission page expressly labels it “PROPOSED” and states that the document is “not yet current.”
